Passe the written driving test - woohoo, but now I have to do the driving test (which includes a manoevarability test which I'm not looking forward to!), and I can arrange that any time, byt the sooner the better because of insurance etc!!

I've been trying to think what I want to do in DC, but since I've been before I cant think of any of the obvious things that I haven't done/been to. Thinking maybe national gallery and the Smithsonian museums. There's an International Spy Museum there which tickeld my fancy and I might go and see. If you have any suggestions on what do do or where to got and what to see, let me know!!

ypdêt

Newydd ffindo mas, trwy gyfieithu gwefan Canolfan Madog, mae eglwys annibynnol oedd adeilad Amgueddfa Treftadaeth Cymry America yn arfer bod. On i wedi dyfalu, ond ddim yn gwbod yn iawn. Wedi rhoi dolen i chi fynd i wefan Canolfan Madog, i chi gal gweld beth sy'n mynd mlan ma.

Wedi ffindo'r gwesty byddwn ni'n aros ynddo fe yn DC, edrych yn ffab, gyda phwll nofio tu fas a gym a chyfleustere i gysylltu da'r we (jest gobitho bo nhw ddim yn costio!!). Heddi wedi bod yn ddiwrnod hir am ryw reswm - a ma dal awr da fi ar ôl!

Yn ôl Google dylse hi gymryd oddeutu 7 awr i ni gyrradd DC sydd ddim yn rhy wael spos. On ni wedi edrych i fynd ar y trên, ond er bod digon o seddi ar y ffordd mas, dodd dim seddi i ddod nol gyda ni!

-------

Whilst translating the Madog Center website, I discovered that the Welsh-American Heritage Musem used to be a Congregational Church, which I had guessed at but didn't know for sure! Also click on the link above to go and have a look at the Madog Center website - it has some interestin infromation.

Found the hotel we're staying at in DC, looks very nice, with an outdoor swimming pool and gym and internet facilities (just hpoe that I don't have to pay for them!!). For some reason today has been an extremely log day and there's still an hour to go!

According to Google, DC is about a 7 hour drive from here. we had looked into an Amtrak train, and even though there was room on the way out there were no seats on the way back!

Penwythnos Tri Diwrnod!

Nos Iau gafon ni storm mellt a tharane a gwynt a glaw itha seriys! Odd e’n itha cyffrous a gweud y gwir. Wel on i fod i fynd i bigo ffrwythe bore dydd Gwener – ond dath Evelyn (y landlord) lan yn y bore a gweud bod i siŵr o fod ddim yn syniad da gan i bod hi dal yn wlyb da drad. Ond, dath hi a wye ffres lan i fi! Ma’i mab hi’n byw gyferbyn â ni (nhw sy berchen y llwyni ffrywthe), a ma da nhw dwrci (neu falle dou), ieir, geifr, gwydde a da! Odd y wye yn fach ac yn fowr, yn wyn, brown, glas a gwyrdd – sy’n neud i fi feddwl falle od wye gwydde mewn na falle.

Ma hi wedi bod yn ychydig o ddyddie od, bod yn America pan fod Farrah Fawcett yn marw bore dydd Iau o ganser, mond ychydig ddyddie ar ôl cyhoeddi ei bod hi am briodi. A wedyn yn hwyrach y dwrnod na ffindo mas bod Jacko wedi marw – odd e’n itha bisâr, a gallai ddim troi’rteledu na’r radio mlan heb weld rhaglen am y late great King of pop neu glywed cân MJ ar y radio!

So ethon ni i bigo bluberries (nawr wy eriod wedi gallu gwitho mas beth yw’r enw Cymraeg cywir am rhain – ma llysi duon bach yn enw Cymraeg ar blueberries bach – so os os enw Cymrag da chi, gadewch i fi wbod!), pnawn dydd Gwener am bron i ddwyawr.

Dydd Sadwrn es i a Jeanne i wirfoddoli yn Amgueddfa Treftadaeth Cymry America yn Oak Hill. Oak Hill oedd un o’r llefydd cyntaf yr aeth y Cymry a ymfudodd yn 1818 i fyw ‘na. Hen Eglwys Gymraeg yw’r adeilad, a adeiladwyd gan y Cymry er mwyn addoli ynddo. Roedd yr eglwys yn llawn dop o wahanol eitemau Cymraeg a Chymreig yn dyddio mor bell yn ôl â’r 1830au, Beiblau, Llyfrau Emynau, a phlatiau a dillad ayb. Does dim a ir conditioning yn yr adeilad, ac ma hi’n glos iawn na. Mae Jeanne wedi bod yn poeni ers sbel fod y pethau sydd yn yr eglwys yn mynd i ddechrau cwympo'n ddarnau.

Daeth Menna Morgan, sy’n gyfrifol am y prosiect Cymry-Ohio (sy'n cael ei arianu gan Evan Davis ac a redir ganddi o’r Llyfrgell Genedlaethol yn Aberystwyth), draw llynedd ac ymweld â’r eglwys, roedd hi wrth ei bodd gyda’r cynnwys, ond fel Jeanne a fi, yn poeni am gyflwr yr eitemau sydd yno. Fi’n credu bod Jeanne yn gobeithio alla i helpu perswadio pobl bod angen gwario arian i gadw cyflwr pethau sydd yn yr amgueddfa. Mae angen o leiaf dehumidifier os nad peiriant cyflyru’r aer. Pe bai’r arian ar gael, byddai digon o waith i un person am tua dwy flynedd yn catalogio, amddiffyn a sortio popeth yn yr eglwys. (Mwy o lunie ar facebook)

Es i draw i dŷ Jeanne ar ôl bod yn yr eglwys a chyfarfod i Merched hi Erin a Megan a’u plant nhw. Prynhawn yn y pwll a wedyn bwyd yn y nos. Es i draw dydd Sul hefyd – tywydd gwych a chyfarfod plentyn arall Megan, a gwŷr y merched. Teulu hyfryd a chroesawgar iawn a phwll nofio gwych i ymlacio wrtho fe!

Mynd i DC dydd Mawrth (gyrru, fydd yn cymryd tua 9 awr aparentli!!), ond cyn yn ma rhaid i fi wneud y prawf gyrru ysgrifenedig waaa!!

---------------

Thursday night saw a massive thunder and lightning and wind and rain storm. It was rather exciting, though a little scary at times! I was supposed to go berry picking on Friday morning – but Evelyn (my landlord) came up in the morning and said it probably wasn’t the best idea because it was still rather wet. But she brought me some fresh eggs for me! Her son and his family live practically opposite us (they own the fruit bushes), and they have a turkey (maybe two), chickens, goats, geese and cows! The eggs were big and small, white brown, blue and green – which makes me think I might have had a goose egg maybe.

It was weird being in America when I read that Farrah Fawcett died on Thursday morning, only a few days after announcing she was getting married. What was even more of a shock was the death of Michael Jackson. At the moment you can’t turn on the tv without seeing a tribute to ‘the late great king of pop’.

So we went blueberry picking in the afternoon Friday afternoon for nearly two hours. There are so many bushes there it’s amazing! I picked about a million blueberries, more than I could ever use before they started rotting, so I put some in the freezer (the next day, because they need to be out at least overnight to finish maturing), gave some to Jeanne, and the rest are in the fridge – but I’ll probably put those in the freezer as well if I don’t eat them before we head off to DC, or they’ll have gone off by the time I’m back!

Saturday Jeanne and I went to volunteer in the Welsh-American Heritage Museum. It’s in Oak Hill, one of the original Welsh settlements in Ohio in 1818. It’s an old Welsh Church that was built by the Welsh at the time as a place of worship, built in the style of the Welsh churches that they had at home. The church was jam-packed with various Welsh items, Bibles galore, various books, hymnals and so many other bits and bobs that I just can’t name them all. There was sooo much stuff there it was ridiculous, they’ve never turned anything away and the place is heaving with Welsh memorabilia piled on top of Welsh memorabilia. There’s no air conditioning and it’s extremely humid, and Jeanne has been worried for a while that the things there will degenerate soon. Some things are in cabinets and very few things are in acid free sleeves. Menna Morgan who is in charge of the Wales-Ohio Project (sponsored by Evan Davis, and run from the National Library in Aberystwyth), had been over last year and was very excited about the contents of the museum, but worried, like Jeanne and I, about the condition of the items, and the lack of temperature control in the church. I think Jeanne hopes that I can help persuade people that there needs to be at least a dehumidifier in the church to help protect the items there, if an Air conditioning unit is too expensive. I think that there’s a two year project in the museum to sort and catalogue everything, and to make sure that they’re preserved – before anything gets destroyed. (pictures above and on facebook)

I went over to Jeanne’s house after the church on Saturday and again on Sunday afternoon; met her daughters and their husbands and their kids – a lovely welcoming and warm family. They also have a lovely pool which I’m ever grateful that they let me use!!!

Off to DC on Tuesday (driving, it’s 9 hours apparently), but before that – the written part of my driving test – help!

----------

Quick post beofre my weekend (teehee). Set up a bank account this morning with the Ohio Valley Bank, things are starting to get together now. Whilst we were in the bank the most amssive thunderstorm and wind and rain broke out. We dashed to the car and went via Jeanne's house to pick up a chair for my office on the way to find out about a driver's licence for me. Apparently I can drive for a year here as a tourist, but I have to get a licence after that. But if I do want a licence I'll have to sit a written test and have a driving test! Do NOT want that. So we're waiting to see what the guy in the university says, because I'm going to be on the Uni's policy, fingers crossed for no need for a licence!!

Off to see the apparnetly awkward HR woman in a minute, then for the interview with the press releases guy. Then the car is arrivng around 4pm hopefully which means I'll have it this weekend to drive around a bit on Friday. Will also be able to take pictures of the surrounding areas then I think! We're volunteering at the Welsh-American Heritage Museum on Saturday then I think off to Jeanne's after that.

-------------------

On my third day in work by now and I still haven't done much. But it's very nice to have a chance to read about the history of those who came here, and ease into things! This means I've had a chance to keep in contact and set up the blog and upload photos to flickr. Hope you enjoyed the photos i added to the prvious blogging; if you want to see more, keep an eye on my flickr page and my facebook page if you so desire!

I'm still car-less but I hope this won't be for long as the weekend is fast approaching and I don't want to be either (a) dependent on my boss Jeanne, or (b) stuck in the apartment all weekend (all three days of the weekend I might add - we work 10 hours a day Monday-Thursday and Fridays off during the summer).

Not sure if I mentioned that I'm off to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival of Wales in Washington D.C. on the 30th. Coming back either on the 4th of 5th of July, and I REALLY hope it's the 5th, as Independance day celebrations in Washington I'm sure would be pretty amazing!!

I have a meeting with the HR woman tomorrow to hopefully sort out my pay etc, and afterwards I have an interview with the man who writes the press releases, so I very well may be famous by the end of the week, but don't worry I shan't forget you!

I'm also meeting the old couple who live in the other appartment today and my Landlady, should be interesting to say the least. Will try to take photos of the campus sometime to give you a feel of what it's like here. Cia for now though!

Y Daith (English at the bottom)

Wel erbyn hyn wy wedi cyrradd yn saff, ond co hanes y daith i chi.....

Dechre trwy hedfan o Gaerdydd am 6am (ar ôl codi am 3.30am) i Amsterdam. Odd da fi ddwyawr yn Amsterdam, a o'n i'n meddwl bydde digon o amser i grwydro o gwmpas, ond wrth gwrs, gan bo fi'n hedfan i America, odd angen checo popeth cyn boardo'r awyren, so dreulies i'r holl amser yn ciwio i fynd ar yr awyren! Odd y flight i Detroit yn hirach na'r arfer yn ôl y sôn (8 awr 20 munud), a nethon ni fwrw turbulence eitha gwael bwyti awr cyn glanio.

Wedi glanio yn Detroit ro'dd yn rhaid mynd trwy immigration, a'r rhan gwaetha am hyn odd y ciwio am oesoedd!! Tra'r o'n i'n ciwio daeth na ddyn customs lan ata i i checio'n ffurflenni a thra'i fod e'n checio fe odd e'n holi cwestiyne i fi, a phan wedes i bod na gymdeithas Gymraeg yn Ne Ohio wedodd e "Oh my six year old son loves Fireman Sam in Welsh!", ges i ddim cyfle i holi, ond neis gwbod bod Sam Tân yn lico teithio fyd!

Am ryw reswm rodd yn rhaid casglu bagiau yn Detroit wedyn a'i checio nhw nol mewn ar ôl mynd trwy customs (mwy o giwio). Y cam nesa oedd ffeindio'r gât ar gyfer yn flight i. Mae maes awyr Detroit yn faes awyr weddol newydd a odd na ddigon o lefydd i eistedd wrth bob gât a llefydd bwyta etc o gwmpas.

Wedi ishte wrth y gât dechreuodd rhyw ddyn odd yn ishte gyferbyn â fi siarad da fi ambwyti siwt odd e'n gorfod mynd gytre i Dayton achos odd i gymydog e wedi gweld neidr yn i 'yard' e a odd ci da hi a odd hi ddim ishe i'r ci gal niwed na ofon, so odd rhaid iddo fe fynd i sorto fe mas! Ath e mlan i weud bod e wedi adeiladu i gartref ar gwrs golff, ond bod e braidd byth na a bod yr holl anifeiliaid gwahanol ma yn ymddangos ar i dir e, gan gynnwys ceffyl i gymydog arall e. Wedyn wedodd e stori hollol bisâr am pan ddath dyn lan iddo fe mewn Sauna yn Las Vegas a gofyn iddo fe esgus bod yn Tiger Woods achos odd e wedi addo i'r dynion busnes 'Arabaidd' fel galwodd e nhw y bydden nhw'n cael chware golff gyda Tiger Woods. So gafodd e'i bigo lan mewn limo a chal dillad a clubs fel Tiger Woods a chal i dalu $2,000 wrth adel! Wy ddim yn gwbod os wy'n credu unrhyw beth o'r stori, ond na ni!!

Ar ôl rhyw awren fach arall dyma ni'n cael mynd ar yr awyren. Odd hi'n 6pm amser lleol, ond 11pm amser Sioned, o'n i'n barod i fynd gytre ac i'r gwely. Fuon ni'n iste ar yr awyren am 45 munud tra'u bod nhw'n trwsio rhywbeth bach odd yn bod da'r awyren. Wedyn halon nhw ni off yr awyren achos bydde hi'n cymryd mwy o amser na'r dishgwl i neud beth bynnag odd angen neud. Newidwyd yr amser hedfan i 8pm, wedyn i 10.45pm, wedyn tua 10, canslwyd y ffleit yn gyfan gwbl. Yn y cyfamser cafodd pob ffleit eu gohirio am gyfnod yn ystod storom o law trwm a mellt a tharane. Ges i ystafell mewn gwesty ac erbyn i fi gyrraedd odd hi'n 11pm, 4am amser Sioned a ro'n i wedi cal digon! Odd Jeanne yn Cincinnati yn chwilio am westy (ma Cincinnati tua 3awr o Rio Grande), ond do'dd dim lle yn y llety! Yn lwcus ro'dd un o'i chydweithwyr wedi hedfan mewn i Cincinnati y noson na a wedi bwcio ystafell ac fe gynnigodd e a'i wraig (a'i fab 3 blwydd oed!) roi lifft nol i fi.

Ar ol glanio yn saff ac ar amser am 1pm - mynd i ôl y bagiau, odd ddim yna, ond oedd wrth lwc wedi dod ar ffleit cynharach o Detroit! Nol a ni i Rio Grande, ac erbyn 4pm ron i yn y fflat ac am ddadbacio ychydig o bethe - dim popeth, on i wedi blino gormod! Ond wrth agor y bag - darganfod fod rhan fwyaf o'r dillad yn wlyb trwyddyn nhw. Yn amlwg odd y bagiau wedi'u cymryd oddi ar yr awyren a'u gadael yn y glaw achos roedden nhw'n socian! So 2 awr yn ddiweddarach ar ôl hongian dillad lan a rhoi rhai yn y tymbl i sychu, ges i ymlacio a chael cawod, ro'n i wedi bod yn gwisgo'r un dillad am bron i 48 awr (ges i ddim o'r bagiau i fynd i'r gwesty yn Detroit)!

Does dim cysylltiad y we yn y fflat ar hyn o bryd, felly wy'n gorfod gwued yr holl ebostio o'r gwaith, sy'n iawn ar hyn o bryd gan nad oes dim arall gyda fi neud ond darllen lan am hanes y mewnfudwyr yn bennaf.

--------------------------------------

Well by now I've arrived safe and well, but here are the main points of my long trip here.

I flew at 6am from Cardiff to Amsterdam, and spent the whole two hours at Amsterdam queueing for the flight to Detroit. We hit quite a bit of turbulence an hour out of Detroit, and the flight time was longer because of it apparently. After landing came the queueing to go through customs and immigration, reclaiming my bags and re-checking them in for the flight to Cincinnati.

Detroit has a new-ish airport and there is plenty of room to sit comfortably, so I went to the gate to sit and read a little. A lovely man started talking to me, he was flying to Dayton, and telling me these stories about how he'd buitl his house on a golf course, and he hadn't planned on going home that weekend but his neighbour had called and said she'd seen a snake in his 'yard', so he had to go home and sort it out. He went on to tell me that once, a horse had appeared on his land (his other neighbour's horse had decided to go for a walk), and the time when a rich man had approached him in a Sauna in Las Vegas and asked him to pose as Tiger Woods (yes he was black, and yes apparently he was quite a good golfer) for a group of what he called Arabian Busienessmen who he was playing golf with the following day. He agreed and was provided with clubs and clothes which he got to keep and was picked up in a limo and paid $2,000 for his troubles. I'm not sure how much, if any of this I believe, but he entertained me for an hour or so!

After he left I had about an hour before my flight, so when we were called to board the (tiny) plane, I was looking forward to getting to Cincinnati and getting home to bed. The flight was due to leave at 6pm Eastern Time (11pm my time, I'd been up since 3.30am - already a loooong day), so we boarded the plane, and sat on it for 45 minutes while the technicians and mechanics worked on the plane, we would be delayed, and many people on the plane would unfortunately miss their connections (4 or 5 were ctching a connecting flight to Frankfurt). We were finally sent off the plane and the flight time was changed to 8pm. Then it was changed to 10.45. Then at 10pm it was taken off the board completely. 4 hours after the orignial take off time it was cancelled. (After being sent off the plane and beofre being told it was finally cancelled, there was a massive rain and thunderstorm that closed all the runways in Detroit. It stopped for a while and then went on though the night). We were all given a room each in a hotel for a night and re-booked on a flight at 12pm the next day. I finally got to my room at around 11pm (4am my time - more than 24 hours after I'd started my journey from Whitchurch!).

By this time Jeanne (the Madog Center Director who had travelled 3 hours to Cincinnati to collect me), was still in Cincinnati waiting for me and trying to find a room for the night to avoid returning home only to come back the next day. She magically bumped into a co-worker in one of the hotels, who were staying the night anyway, and who offered to pick me up the next day, and so they did, and Jeanne got to go home!

I finally arrived in Cincinnati at 1pm on 20 June, 13 hours late!! After thinking that my bags were still in Detroit (they had come on an earlier flight and were in the Delta Baggage Office), we headed to Rio Grande, and arrived about 4pm. I met Jeanne for the first time and my landlord Evelyn Kirkhart and settled into the flat.

I hadn't planned on totally unpacking as I was quite tired and in desperate need of a proper wash and some food and rest. I opened my cases to find most of my clothes soaking wet. They had obviously been taken out of the plane and left on the runway for a significant amount of time. So I spent the next 2 hours hanging clothes up all around the apartment and tumble drying what I could!

It was an extreme journey but I finally got there in the end. Oh the weather is hot and humid, and the flat is out in the wilds with many acres of land - it's beautiful!
